You are your social brand.
One of my favorite thinkers said it best.
Pick yourself, and keep making art until someone can’t ignore you any longer.
Why I think a social brand matters.
This is not a new concept.
At some point, I realized there’s a difference between personal and social.
The word, social, defines your relationship with society in general.
It is society that identifies you as a social brand.
A social brand is any company, product, or individual that uses social technologies to communicate with social customers, their partners and constituencies, or the general public.

Why I think a personal brand is not clear enough.
Social is the opposite of personal.
Personal defines your relationship with yourself specifically.
A personal brand is something you probably have seen mentioned a lot lately. At first, I thought a personal brand and a social brand were the same thing. However, I am noticing a distinction between the two.
I admit the distinction between the two types of brand is not very clear. It is almost a blurry line that is nearly impossible to see. In the end, I asked myself this question.
Do you share your most personal thoughts with society in general or with your closest family and friends?
Why your brand matters.
A statement jumped out to me.
Everyone is a free agent.
It’s true. It is a natural human desire to do what we want to enjoy doing. We see this all the time as people change over the years.
In the end, regardless of what you choose to do, one thing matters. Your brand, whether you call it a personal brand or a social brand, is what others know you as.
This is a concept that has been around a long time. All one has to do is to peer into the past to find an example. For example, off the top of my head, George Washington. A military general, a president of the USA, and a boy who cannot tell a lie.
Okay, maybe he fibbed a time or two.
Why I created the markdeafmcguire brand.
It is because of this reason I investigated the concept of a social brand.
That’s when I realized I already had a brand, markdeafmcguire. I created this by accident while making an email address for myself.
My name is obvious. The challenge is that there are at least 100 other people with the same name. In addition to that, people often associate my name with a famous baseball player, Mark McGwire. Our names sound the same but they are spelled differently.
But there was one thing I was proud of.
That is being deaf.
